HONORABLE MR. MUSTAPA MOHAMED 

Minister of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia 
 
He was appointed Minister of International Trade and Industry  on April 10, 2009. Mustapa served as Member of the Parliament for the constituency of Jeli, in Kelantan from 1995 to 1999. From 2004 to 2008, Mustapa held the positions of Minister inthe Prime Minister’s Department, Minister of Higher Education, and Minister of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry. A graduate in economics from the University of Melbourne, Australia, he pursued a Master’s degree at Boston University and began work as an Administrative and Diplomatic Officer in the Ministry of Finance (1974 to 1980).  Later, he lectured at the National Institute of Public Administration (1982 to 1984) and served as Special Officer to the Minister of Finance (1984 to 1987), before entering active politics in late 1987.   

Academic awards bestowed Mustapa in recognition of his contribution to public service include an Honorary Doctorate of Commerce from the University of Melbourne (1997), and an Honorary Degree of Law by the University of Nottingham (2005).

Mustapa also went through the Lee Kwan Yew Exchange Fellowship Programme in January 2002.  He was awarded an Honorary Fellowship to the National Institute of Public Administration in 1997 and as a Fellow for the inancial Services Institute of Australia (FINSIA) in 2008.

JOHN F. COYNE - GUEST SPEAKER

President and Chief Executive, Western Digital Corporation 

John F. Coyne is president and chief executive officer of Western Digital Corpatation.  He is a member of Western Digital  board of directors, has been president since June 2006 and became CEO in January 2007.  Coyne has dedicated the majority of his career to Western Digital, erving the company in many capacities around the globe. John F. Coyne has been a director since October 2006.  He joined us in 1983 and has served in various executive capacities. From November 2002 until June 2005, Mr. Coyne served as Senior Vice President, Worldwide Operations, from June 2005 until November 2005, he served as Executive Vice President, Worldwide Operations, and from November 2005 until  June 2006, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operations  Officer. Effective June 2006, he was named President and Chief Operating Officer. In January 2007, he became President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Coyne is also a Director of Jacobs Engineering Group Inc.

MARC P. MEALY - Seminar Chairman

Acting Vice President, US ASEAN Business Council 

The Council is the leading American trade association devoted exclusively to supporting the competitiveness of American companies doing business in Southeast Asia.  At the Council, he directs the US-Malaysia Business Council, the US-Philippines Business Committee and the ASEAN Financial Services Working Group. Mr. Mealy is an international economist with expertise in the areas of U.S. international trade policy and international political economy.
 
He began his professional career in 1989 as an international economist with USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. While at USDA, he was admitted into the U.S. Foreign Service and managed some of USDA’s largest commodity trade finance and food assistance programs in Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe.  In 1994, he joined the African American Institute, an international NGO, as the Director of their Trade and Investment Program. From 1996 to 1999, he worked as an economic consultant to entities  such as the U.S. Agency for International Development, the World Bank, Action Aid-USA and the Government of Rwanda. Prior to joining US-ASEAN Business Council, Marc spent four years in the U.S. Congress. From 1999 to 2001, he worked on the Professional Staff of the House International Relations Committee where he served as the principle economist to 23 Democratic members of Congress on global economic policy. From 2001 to 2003, he served as the international economic and foreign policy advisor to Congressmen Gregory Meeks of New York, a member of the House International Relations and Financial Services Committees. During that period, he played a leading role in the creation of the Malaysia Trade, Security and Economic Cooperation caucus in the Congress and served as its first Staff Director.  
  
Marc holds a B.A. in Economic and Third World Studies from Oberlin College and an M.S. degree in Economics from the University of Florida. His writings have been published both in the U.S. and internationally and he has lived, traveled, lectured and worked in over 30 nations in Asia and Africa.
